Chapter 30

It was early evening as Ruth gathered the members of the CID team together. She had called Garrow who had reassured her that he would be back in CID the following morning. She knew that the CPS dropping charges against Lucy Morgan would have really got to him – but that was a conversation for the morning. She now had a murder and an abduction to deal with.

‘Just to bring everyone up to speed,’ she said, as she twisted the cap from a cold bottle of water. It might have been nearly 8pm but the evening was still very warm. ‘As most of you know, we believe that Natalie Jenkins has been abducted from her home at some point this afternoon. There were signs of a struggle and also signs that she may have been tied up, attacked, or even tortured.’ Ruth then gestured over to French and Kennedy. ‘From what you guys found at Ian Bellamy’s home, it’s clear that there is some kind of illegal firearms manufacturing going on. We know that Aaron met with Bellamy at The Red Lion pub at lunchtime only a couple of hours before he was shot dead. And we know that he was killed with a submachine gun, possibly the Skorpion gun that he told his brother he was keeping for what he termed ‘dangerous people’.’

French looked over. ‘And that also fits in with the guns and plans that we found at Bellamy’s home. They are all for a Skorpion submachine gun.’

Kennedy’s phone rang and she moved away to take the call.

Nick nodded. ‘And we know that Aaron had met with some very dubious looking characters from Merseyside.’

Ruth glanced over at Georgie. ‘Any news on the registration of that Range Rover we saw in the car park?’

‘I ran it through with the DVLA,’ she said. ‘They told me that the plate had been reported stolen six months ago.’

‘Great,’ Ruth sighed. It wasn’t a huge surprise. Men like that knew exactly how to cover their tracks.

Kennedy came back over and gestured to her phone. ‘Boss, I put out some feelers to a contact I’ve got in the NCA.’

The NCA – National Crime Agency – was a national law enforcement unit for the whole of the UK. They focussed on organised crime, especially weapon and drugs trafficking.

‘What did they have to say?’ Ruth asked.

Kennedy gave them all a significant look. ‘Seems that they’re running a joint operation with Merseyside Police Organised Crime Task Force. And they have suspects in firearms trafficking that they think they can link to the Llangollen area.’

Ruth’s eyes widened. It seemed that they had uncovered something more significant than they had expected.

‘They want the SIO or deputy SIO to call them asap.’

Ruth signalled to Nick that she wanted him to do it.

‘Good. Thanks Jade. Right, great work today everyone. I don’t want to see anyone here after eleven tonight. Back in by six tomorrow morning, except for the night shift.’

Ruth began to walk towards her office, noticing how drained she felt.
